The isolated score 2.0 track has the same music as the 1.0 version, but is mastered differently and is obviously in stereo, so it doesn’t exactly sound like the mono music in the movie (probably closer to an OST CD or the Manga dub). For more on how modern home video releases often mangle older audio, I recommend checking out [blah-ray's blog.](https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/p/what-isthis-revisited-my.html) #### Japanese Mono * **1993 JP LD**: An analog version of the '95 digital track, so has some additional hiss, but sounds great nonetheless. No complaints. * **1995 JP LD**: Sounds clear and lively, with no limiting or any apparent noise reduction issues. The best version of this track I've heard thus far. * **2001 JP DVD**: Similar to the LDs but has [quite major limiting](https://slow.pics/c/k74d3ULg) throughout and some [noise reduction/EQ](https://slow.pics/c/eD5aOLOV) (2-4 dB) at 6-13 kHz. Also shows a slight increase in bass at 25-200 Hz compared to the LDs. (384 kbps) * **2008 JP BD**: A lossless version of the 2001 JP DVD. * **2012 UK BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2014 JP BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2015 US BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2019 JP 4K BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2021 US 4K BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2025 US BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. #### English (Streamline) Mono * **1997 JP LD**: Has a slightly drier sound than the other releases [and enough extra low end (4-7 dB) to be by far the bassiest track for this movie.](https://slow.pics/c/jMOk1gOx) Not as dynamic as the JP DVD/UK BD version. * **2001 JP DVD**: Aside from the low bitrate, seems fine, with no limiting or major NR issues. The mastering is much less bass-heavy than the 1997 JP LD and sounds closer to the JP mono. (192 kbps) * **2012 UK BD**: A lossless version of the JP DVD, but has quite many short artifacts (fixed with the ~1.2 seconds of splice-ins). * **2015 US BD**: Like the JP DVD [but is limited throughout.](https://slow.pics/c/ZSMjrNaQ) Strangely, there's a sudden, two-second-long spike in volume at 44min9s that reaches way beyond the rest of the track. * **2021 US 4K BD**: Same as the 2015 US BD. * **2025 US BD**: Seems to be a lossy-to-lossless conversion of the 2001 JP DVD track, [based on the similar waveforms, ~19.5 kHz cutoffs, and frequency line graphs.](https://slow.pics/c/U3PbjDRK) #### English (Manga) Stereo * **2021 US 4K BD**: Likely the highest-fidelity mix produced for this movie. The stereo M&E stems sound excellent, and I can't discern any limiting or EQ/NR issues. * **2025 US BD**: Same as the 2021 US 4K BD. #### English (Discotek) 5.1 and Stereo * **2025 US BD**: This dub appears to be based on the same M&E stems as the JP remixes. Interestingly, the 2.0 track and the center channel of the 5.1 track have [EQ dips at 1 and 2 kHz.](https://slow.pics/c/OZCO8ijf) I'm not sure whether they're intentional or accidentally applied filtering. The only other time I've seen bell-shaped dips in a relatively modern track was in the [center channel of Kite's JP 5.1 mix](https://fap.iss.one/view/4185781), which didn't sound very good (that was an extreme case, though). Let me know if you have an idea why they might be there. ### Subtitles 2023 v1 notes: For the main subtitles, I OCR’d Shoko Oono’s revised translation from the 2021 US 4K BD, fully retimed it, styled the dialogue and songs, typeset the signs, and added a few missing italics. Should be a decent overall improvement over the PGS subs and the existing stuff on nyaa. #### Crash's 2023 v1 dubtitle notes The Streamline dubtitles were compiled from two main sources: a dubtitle track from the 2001 Ghibli R2J DVD, and the script booklet which came with the 1997 JP LD. Unfortunately, both sources had major issues. The Ghibli DVD had a [dreadful font](https://i.imgur.com/7SH6yvw.png) which caused enormous difficulty upon OCR. Both sources suffer from a lot of typos and lines that are completely different from what's being said throughout. This required a line-by-line check of the entire movie to make sure the subs were actually correct, and to the best of my ability make sure that all lines that could be possibly covered were. The Manga dubtitles were taken from the subtitle translation on the 2007 Manga R1DVD, as it has a lot of lines that are close to or are the same as the dub's script. Unfortunately, a significant amount (my unscientific estimation is 50-65%) of the lines were very different from the dub, and required a line-by-line check of the entire movie, in addition to having to check the entire movie again to find all the new extra lines added in the dub. Thanks must go to hydes for logging the (ridiculously obvious at points) changes that the Family-Friendly mix did, as I was absolutely exasperated after finishing the Manga dubtitles. Without his help I would not have been able to do it. ### Specifics Video: 1. 2025 US BD Remux Audio: 1. Japanese 1.0 FLAC (1995 JP LD) 2. English 1.0 FLAC (2012 UK BD) (Streamline) 3.
